Recently eighteen rising leaders throughout New Zealand graduated from the first series of our Emerging Leaders Programme for 2018. The programme, crafted for those under 35, includes three two-day workshops, coaching and a self-assessment which explores areas of strength and opportunities for development.
We sat down with graduate Ester Nicolay to find out what she thought of the programme. Ester is currently Group Corporate Services Manager for TPT Group which has several successful businesses including Advanced Security. She has been working for the group for over 10 years and was looking to further grow her leadership ability and develop skills in mentoring others in the business.
How would you describe your overall experience on the Emerging Leaders Programme?
I really enjoyed the opportunity to be a part of the Emerging Leaders Programme. I was grateful to be given the opportunity by my organisation to be a part of it and have enjoyed the learning that I’ve achieved out of it. The programme being structured as three different courses has allowed me to gain different experiences and knowledge that I’ve been able to take back to my role and my organisation as a whole.
At the commencement of the Emerging Leaders Programme you completed the Emerge Capability Assessment. This tool created a personal assessment of your individual strengths and development areas, and placed this knowledge into the context of your company. What benefit did you gain from this process?
The Emerge Capability Assessment was really helpful in identifying my strengths. It was really nice to learn that I build rapport easily with others/have this reinforced because it is such a big part of my role and what I do.
Did the three programmes Influence & Behaviour, Delegation & Communication and Principles of Strategy integrate well and cover what you expected?
The three courses over the three sessions have integrated really well. I’ve obtained different skills and takeaways from each session that I’ve been able to take back to my role and organisation. I have been able to apply these and I will continue to apply them on my journey to come. This is part of lifelong learning and an ability to continue to improve myself and be a better leader.
How did the cohort of peers contribute to your learning?
The cohort of people on the course were all high achievers in their organisations and future leaders. It’s been really great to be able to interact with them, share ideas and learn from one another.
What advice would you give to future Emerging Leaders going through the programme?
Come into the course with an open mind and be authentic and true to yourself. Take the opportunity to learn from other people and from the wealth of knowledge at People Leaders.
